Swimming Lessons

Serving the Greater East Bay including San Leandro, Castro Valley, Hayward, Oakland, and San Lorenzo, CA.

Competitors need more than a strong stroke. They need sharp timing, a concentrated mind, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. The competitive program at The Swim Academy is designed for swimmers who are water safe, can swim laps, and are ready to take on more advanced skills. Once your child has mastered the basics, we help them level up working toward team readiness with a focus on diving, flip turns, finishes, and the finer details of race-level swimming.

While we are instructing the whole time, these kids do more laps, more training, and more targeted work. Our coaches deliver on-deck corrections, clear feedback, and structured sets that build speed, form, and confidence. This is where we take swimmers who can swim and teach them how to compete. With the right guidance, your child can go from comfortable in the water to fully prepared to join a swim team.

Benefits of Competitive Swimming Lessons

Competitive training takes swimmers from practice to performing at race level. Each class is engineered to perfect form, increase endurance, and hone stroke efficiency under stress.

We practice all four strokes, as well as turns, starts, and finishes. Swimmers are taught to pace, manage their breathing, and hold their technique on each lap. Drills are sequenced to build strength and endurance as well as to recognize and correct habits that most hinder swimmers. This is not just a matter of putting in extra work. It’s about smarter work, guided by wise coaches who can get the most out of each athlete.

Common FAQs About
Competitive Swimming Lessons

Who is competitive training for?

This program is designed for swimmers who already have a solid technique in all four strokes and want to compete or improve their racing skills. It’s ideal for swimmers preparing for team tryouts.

What’s the focus of a typical session?

Sessions focus on a mix of technique, endurance, race strategy, and mental readiness. We rotate through drills for starts, turns, breathing while also including time-based sets.

How often should my swimmer train?

A majority of competitive swimmers practice several times a week. We can assist in creating a schedule that meets your swimmer’s objectives and keeps them progressing.

Does this replace swim practice?

Not necessarily. It is used by some swimmers to condition for a team, by others to complement team practice with personalized instruction and targeted skill development.

Are the sessions one-on-one or in small groups?

We provide group classes only. Group classes promote healthy competition and pacing.

What if my swimmer has hit a plateau?

That’s a good time to step in. Competitive practice assists swimmers in overcoming plateaus by refining technique, adding new drills, as well as offering personal feedback.

Will this program help with mental preparation?

Absolutely. We discuss focus, habit, and attitude as well as physical ability. Swimmers are taught how to get prepared for meets, cope with nerves, and remain alert at meets.

Is there an age limit for this training?

We teach competitive swimmers of every age group, ranging from older children to teenagers who are training. The only requirement is readiness for skills.
